Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Senior Accountant to join our finance team. This role is critical to ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong relationships with third-party property managers, and supporting strategic planning through financial analysis, forecasting and variance analysis. The ideal candidate will have a strong accounting background and excellent analytical skills. Experience in public accounting, real estate or property management would be a plus.
This is a full-time, on-site position based at our suburban Ann Arbor office. Remote work is not available for this role due to the nature of the responsibilities and requires collaboration with our internal team.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
Update future cash flow forecasts and distribution expectations based on current performance and market trends.
Perform regular financial analysis and review key performance metrics such as weighted average lease term, return on investment, variances from plan, etc.
Review accounting records submitted by third-party property management partners for accuracy and completeness; follow up on discrepancies, questions, or issues with third-party managers to ensure timely resolution; efficiently record monthly summary transactions from third-party managers into our financial systems.
Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and rolling forecasts for each property and consolidated portfolio.
Support quarterly family office reporting, including performance summaries, capital account updates, and distribution tracking.
Reconcile intercompany transactions and investment activity.
Collaborate with asset management and operations teams to provide financial insights and support decision-making; prepare regular internal reports for operations team.
Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and external audit requirements. Document and test workflows.
Review underwriting models in conjunction with understanding accounting for development projects and setting up initial budgets.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
Minimum 3 years of accounting experience (experience in real estate or property management would be a plus).
Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel. (Experience with Yardi would be a plus).
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with internal teams and external partners.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
