Experienced Custom Framer
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Custom Framer to join our team. The ideal candidate has a keen eye for design, a mastery of custom framing techniques, and a deep knowledge of materials and conservation methods. The experienced Custom Framer will work directly with clients to design the perfect framing solution for artwork, photographs, and memorabilia, and will be responsible for the precise, high-quality assembly of all custom projects. This role requires exceptional attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and excellent customer service skills.
Responsibilities and Duties
Design Consultation: Work closely with clients to understand their needs and vision. Provide expert advice on appropriate frame styles, matting, glass, and mounting techniques to best showcase and preserve their items.
Production and Assembly: Accurately measure, cut, and assemble frames, mats, glass, and backing materials for a wide array of projects, including complex multi-layered displays and shadow boxes.
Material Expertise: Possess advanced knowledge of conservation-grade materials, such as acid-free matboard, UV-protective glass, and reversible mounting techniques, to ensure the long-term preservation of art.
Technical Proficiency: Operate and maintain a variety of framing equipment, including computerized mat cutters (CMC), miter saws, and joining machinery, to achieve precise cuts and finishes.
Quality Assurance: Conduct final inspections of all custom framing orders to ensure the highest standards of craftsmanship are met before delivery to the client.
Inventory and Ordering: Assist with inventory management for framing materials and supplies. Place orders with vendors and suppliers as needed.
Shop Maintenance: Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace. Perform routine maintenance and calibration of equipment.
Problem-Solving: Troubleshoot and resolve complex framing challenges, including handling irregularly shaped or delicate items.
Qualifications
Proven experience as a custom framer, demonstrating a strong portfolio of high-quality finished work.
Advanced technical skills with all standard framing tools and equipment.
In-depth knowledge of art handling, conservation techniques, and preservation-grade materials.
Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to meticulous craftsmanship.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for engaging with clients and coworkers.
Strong visual and creative design skills, including knowledge of color theory and composition.
Problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt and find solutions for unique projects.
Physical ability to lift heavy materials and stand for extended periods.
Industry certification, such as Certified Picture Framer (CPF), is preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand and move around the shop for prolonged periods.
Capacity to lift and carry moderately heavy objects, including large frames and glass.
Manual dexterity for handling delicate artwork and operating precision tools.
Comfortable working with and around various power and hand tools.
