YouthBuild Classroom Aide

Fort Wayne Housing Authority – Fort Wayne, IN

About the Role

The Fort Wayne Housing Authority is seeking a Classroom Aide to support the YouthBuild program. This role helps young adults ages 16–24 reach their educational and career goals by assisting instructors in delivering academic lessons, career readiness training, and life skills development. The Classroom Aide plays a vital part in creating a positive, supportive, and engaging learning environment that prepares students for success in school, work, and life.

What You’ll Do

Assist instructors with lessons, activities, and projects in the classroom.

Support students individually or in small groups with coursework, GED preparation, and career pathway programs.

Reinforce academic content in core subjects such as math, reading, science, and social studies.

Provide mentorship and guidance to students navigating educational, employment, or personal challenges.

Help students with life skills such as resume writing, interview preparation, and job search activities.

Assist with classroom organization, materials, and administrative tasks.

Support positive behavior and model professionalism, teamwork, and respect.

Track student progress and share updates with instructors.

Participate in staff meetings, training, and YouthBuild events.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED required; some college or coursework in education, adult education, or instructional design preferred.

Minimum of 3 years of experience working with youth in any setting.

At least 2 years of experience teaching basic skills to high school students or adults preferred.

Experience working with youth ages 16–24, particularly those facing barriers to education, is preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential.

Respect for the ideas and intelligence of all students.

Ability to manage group dynamics and support students with varying academic and emotional needs.

Passion for youth development, education, and community building.

Valid state-issued driver’s license required; must be insurable under the Authority’s plan.

Technical Skills

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Ability to learn new computer software programs as needed.
